He was among the first settlers of Middletown n 1774.
He was on the list of Freemen in 1783.231

It is told that while he was driving cattle toward his home, he was attacked by a pack of fourteen wolves but drove them off with only a club.

He was a member of the Congregational Church and because of his sobriety was known as Deacon Ben, although he never held that office., 432

Served in the Revolutionary War. He served in Captain Ebenezer Allen's company of Colonel Samuel Herrick's Vermont Rangers at the Battle of Bennington; in 1780 he served in Captain John Spafford's company; in 1781 he served under his brother-in-law, Captain Jacob Wood, in Colonel Lee's regiment.433,432
