He was a Quaker. “At a court of 13 June 1660, Daniel Butler "for reseving a strange Quaker, when apprehended by the Marshall, Barlow, and for his breaking away when taken prisoner, is sentenced to be publickly whipt, which accordingly was pformed…. With the outbreak of the Pequot War in 1675, Daniel Butler was required to serve in the militia. As a Quaker he could not do so, and was fined £8 as a Hdelinquent soldier'' 10 March 1675/6 (Shurtleff, 5: 190). His brother Obediah then was noted as "absent" and it may be that Daniel Butler also absented himself from Sandwich for a time , as his name does not appear on a 1675 list of Sandwich men. However, he does reappear in the list of 1677 (Freeman, 2:68, 72)”2108
