Notes for James Davis
Arrived in America in 1634-35 - was made a Freeman in Newbury, MA on 4 Mar 1634/5.
2082In 1640 he with eleven others cleared the forest at the Indian village of Pentucket and founded the present city of Haverhill, MA. He was a prominent man, serving as selectman and representative to the General Court. He was a Puritan and once accused John Godfrey of witchcraft.
2082 (Godfrey was acquitted of the charges. Godfrey apparently had a difficult personality that frequently put him at odds with his neighbors. He was involved in numerous Massachusetts cases either as a plaintiff or defendant, including one additional trial in which he was accused and acquitted of witchcraft and another case when he charged a woman with witchcraft.)
