Notes for Samuel Butterfield
Samuel Brutterfield, a son of Nathaniel, was a man of some prowess as an Indian fighter. He was taken prisoner by the Indians at Groton in August, 1704, and remained a captive upwards of a year. His petition to the General Court after his release, sets forth that he was an inhabitant of Chelmsford sent by Capt. Jerathmel Bowers to Groton to help Col. Taylor, when the enemy came upon them. From some early accounts fo the affair it appears that Butterfield made a vigorous resistance, and before being captured, slew an Indian Sagamore “of great dexterity in war,” in consequence of which the Indians proposed to inflict upon him a death by torture, but the squaw of the slain Indian interceded in his behalf and his life was spared.
