Early in 1675 King Phillip’s War began. In June Phillip’s warriors surpised and killed Jacob Mitchell, his wife, Susanna and her brother John, early in the morning, as they were fleeing on horsback to John Cooke’s garrison, where they had sent their children the afternoon before. They were able to reach the garrison, but died of their wonds1141. They were called the first victims of the tomahawk.

His brother Edward, for many years chidless, took into his family the three orphan childrend of his younger brother, Jacob, educated them, and are for them like a father. Their subsequent careers proved how thoroughly it was done.1142
