Military notes for Martha Lane
William Orcutt has frequently been assigned two spouses, Mary Lane and Martha _____. The marriage date commonly attributed to William Orcutt and Mary Lane is taken from the Hobart journal of Hingham MA events, which records on 24 January 1663/4, that “Adnrew Lanes Daughter Maryed.” William Orcutt is identified as a son-in-law of Andrew Lane in the latter’s probate agreement of 27 July 1675, with William’s wife not named. Of the twelve known children of William Orcutt, ten baptisms are recorded in Scituate, all listed as children of William Orcutt, with the mother’s name unstated. The only contemporary document that list a wife for William is the will administration…, which calls her Martha, and identifies the ten living heirs as “her children.”
The confusion came from Andrew Lanes’s daughter Mary, who died young in 1646. And the fact that Martha’s birth is not recorded.905
Notes for William (Spouse 1)
"William Hawcott of Coventry, Warwicksire, pinmaker, bound to John Bridges, merchant, to serve 4 years in Barbados." This may be our William and, if he came by way of Barbados, it would explain why there is no record of him coming from England.903

The last records of William are his estate records in 1693 and 1694. His estate was administered by his son William and his widow Martha. The fact that his widow was refered to as Martha in the estate records has given rise to the speculation that Mary (Lane) Orcutt died and that Martha was William's second wife. However, recent Orcutt researchers have concluded that Mary (Lane) Orcutt and Martha Orcutt are the same person; that is, in her later life Mary went by the name Martha. This conclusion is based on the wording of two documents; the 27 Jul 1675 agreement signed by William, and the 30 Oct 1694 agreement between the widow Martha and her children which is part of the estate records. The latter agreement names all the children except daughters Elizabeth and Deborah.904
