Daniel Markham, II, The American immigrant, was born in Plumstead Manor near Norwich, England, of which ancient city his brother Matthew was mayor in 1664. He was the ancestor of the present Admiral Markham of the British Navy whose mother, brothers and sisters live in Independence, Iowa. Sir Clements Markham of the Royal Geographical Society also comes from the same ancestor. Daniel arrived in Cambridge, MA in 1665 whence he removed to Middletown, CT in 1667, was made a free man in 1674. He was a deacon of the First Congreationle church in 1690 and a proprietor of the first bell that hung in the meeting house, on Nov 18, 1679. He first married Nov 3, 1669, Elizabeth, daughter of Lieut Francis Whitmore of Cambridge. This marriage was favored with three children. [History compiled by Lester Markham, Thomasville, NC 1933]
