Notes for Luther Reed Holbrook
Luther Reed Holbrook was born August 27, 1813 in Tolland, Tolland County, Connecticut the son of Elias Holbrook and Sally Reed. He studied medicine for three years and practiced with the physician with whom he studied. He also attended a course of lectures at New Haven Medical College. Ill health caused him to abandon this profession and he then taught school.

Luther married Mary Ann Mitchell in August 1838. They were the parents of six children, Charles Kirk, George Wilbur, Eliza Jane, Elias, Sarah Graham and Luther Reed. Soon after their marriage they moved to Lee County, Iowa and in 1850, with is parents, he came to Appanoose County, Iowa settling in Pleasant Township. He erected the first house south of Cincinnati, where he owned 240 acres of land and operated a nusery.

In 1855 Luther along with his brother Solomon Holbrook, Daniel and John McDonald and surveyor Jonathan F. Stratton helped plat the town of Cincinnati, in Pleasant Township, Appanoose County.

Luther was a member of and a zealous worker in the Congregational church, giving the land for the church and parsonage. He was also prominent as one of the strong anti-slavery men of Cincinnati before and during the Civil War, his farm being a station on the Underground Railroad. He was known as a stern disciplinarian and no cards nor liquor were allowed in his home. He was attacked by an angry bull and never recovered fully.

Luther died February 8, 1891 at Cincinnati, Appanoose County, Iowa. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Pleasant Township, Appanoose County, Iowa along with his wife Mary Ann who died October 26, 1880.
