“He taught school for a while and then worked at the trade of shoemaker for 16 years in factories in Mansfield, Salem and Haverhill, MA. He is a Republican, and has been active in the management of the party and the support of its candidates. In 1902 he was elected to the common council from Ward Hill and the following year re-elected and chosen president., ‘Mr. Child demonstrated unusual executive ability and possessed those qualities of mind and character that attract the confidence and friendship of the people. Few men in the city are better known or more popular with all classes of people.’, He was elected Secretary of the Haverhill Board of Trade, a position he filled with conspicuous credit., He was elected overseer of the poor and continues to hold this office (as of 1908, when Cutter's Genealogical and Personal Memoirs was orginally printed), He was the candidate at the Republican caucus for mayor of the city and ‘made a good run’, He was a Republican and active in management of the party and support of its candidates.” 15
